Friday, September 11th
5 - 6 pm: Gather at the Seeley Lake Community Hall to check in and share some social time. (Click here to view a map location.)
Saturday, September 12th
MORNING SESSION 9 AM - Jodi Gear - Artist
Ink and Watercolor Paint Making from Plants
Jodi will conduct a session on ink and paint making from plant dyes, exploring and experimenting with botanical color in a hands-on setting. Students will take home samples of the paint and ink they have made.
This workshop is designed for beginners and experienced makers alike. Some materials will be provided.
A demonstration on making lake pigments from plant dyes will be done, and students will then make a pan of watercolor paint from the pigment.
Supplies List
- Sketchbook or watercolor book with smooth paper.
- dip pens if you have them
(Jodi will have enough dip pens for people to borrow). - Paint brushes; Use Kris’ or bring your own favorites.

- Squirt bottle to hold water
- Rubber or latex type gloves (if you don't want to dye your hands).
- An old towel to place under your dyeing tray.

- Perferred media with brushes, etc. ( geared toward outdoor art practice.)
A handout with resources and terminology will be provided. Bring your own spindle to use in class, or borrow one of Sylvia’s. Students may purchase take-home spindles if you chose to do so.
AFTERNOON SESSION 1:00 PM -Sylvia Smith - Spinner
Beginning Spindle Spinning
Sylvia will teach you how to spin different types of wool on a drop spindle, and you’ll also learn how to create a plied yarn with this tool. At first glance, spinning on a drop spindle appears slower and more primitive than using a spinning wheel to create yarn. Looks can be deceiving, as a spindle is an effective tool for making yarn and it is more affordable and portable than a spinning wheel. No spinning experience is necessary.
Sunday, September 13th
MORNING SESSION 9 AM - Sylvia Smith - Spinner
Easy Peasy Silk Scarf Dyeing
Sylvia will help create your own unique wearable art using a virtually mess-free dyeing technique. No dyeing or fiber arts experience is required.
Dyers will use silk scarves as their canvas to create either abstract or tangible images, using a broad palette of colors. One 6” x 54 “ silk scarf is included in the class fee.
Additional scarfs will be available for purchase. Participants may have time to dye more than one scarf.
AFTERNOON SESSION 1:00 PM
- Kathy Settevendemie - Nature Journalist, Nature Journaling
Kathy has been nature journaling for years and brings to her journaling practice a background in growing native plants, an arts background in photography and visual arts, and she is an experienced watercolor artist specializing in botanical illustrations of Montana native plants. A skilled presenter and educator, Kathy brings passion and enthusiasm to her sessions that are open to people of all experience levels who love nature.

Painting For A Dream: 2-Day Resident Art Workshop
We Paint. We help young artists DREAM.
The Painting for a Dream (PFAD) Workshops are resident workshops hosted in the beauty of Seeley Lake, Montana. These were usually held twice a year in the spring and fall.
Instructors were working professional instructor painters who used their expertise to teach and inspire artists of all levels.
Particpants spent two days in the workshop and no doube acquired a lifetime of inspiration! In addition, PFAD raises money for our Youth Grant and Senior Scholarships that support local students who want to study the arts.
Painting for a Dreamworkshop instructors have included Karen Leigh, Pat Branting, Wendy Marquis, T.J. Lynde, Tricia Bass, Julie Wulf, Tara Houston, Lance Johnson and Jim Howard.

Painting instructions provided by local artist, Kris Gullikson. These sessions are designed to be enjoyable, in a fun, relaxed atmosphere, and you end up creating a personal piece of art.
